Tough Questions

What kind of church would Jesus attend? If Jesus showed up this Sunday to attend a church in America, where would He go? We are not talking about Jesus from 2,000 years ago…He would have showed up at someone’s house. Jesus is fully aware of the status of the church right now in America. So, where would He go to church?
That question is about trying to discern what Jesus would think of the state of His church in America. The kind of church we like is one that is protected, and why wouldn’t we? Safety is important, but is it the most important thing? Culture and church are often at odds with each other because we are a part of culture, but the world we live in can often celebrate the wrong things.
Francis Chan is a well-known pastor who left a church he started because he felt God leading him in a new direction. He spent a great deal of time in China, learning about the Christian movement there. Chan came back to America changed and with some troubling new insight.
In his new book, Chan asks the question, “If all you had to reference was the Bible, what would the church look like?” In his conversations with church leaders in China, they shared their view of American Christianity: “In America, you believe a pastor has to be famous to have an impact, but in China (as an underground church), the people with the most impact are the ones who go unknown…not because they are so humble but because if they are discovered, they may be killed.” It doesn’t get anymore real than that.
Right now, the largest church in the world is the underground church in China, and you and I couldn’t name ONE of their leaders. In the age of celebrity adoration, who we need to worship most is Jesus. Following Jesus is how we realize what His church should look like.
Our goal at Shoreline is to worship Jesus alone and know Him fully. We want you to connect at Shoreline and get to work. Membership has responsibilities, not privileges. If you come up with a great idea for ministry/service, let us know and go do it. God is too dynamic to only communicate with me about the ways we can serve His Kingdom.
Paul heard that the church in Colossae was starting to be transformed, loving in the name of Jesus, and Paul knew the prayer to pray. Paul writes in Colossians 1:9, “For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding.” Paul wants us to haveĀ allĀ spiritual wisdom and understanding of Jesus…who He really is. That’s a great prayer!
That prayer is now my new prayer for you. God wants us to have the full knowledge of Jesus and to understand His will. May we all be filled with the love of Jesus that the whole world may know who He is because of us.
Blessings to you,
Joe
